Marihelen has been married to Dr. Paul Wheeler for 25 years and is mother to 3 sons, also serving as a mentor and host family to many students. She has been involved with various local arts and environmental groups, including the Alachua County Education Association and Florida Wildlife Care. Her activist work includes 8 years dedicated to water quality and conservation, which led her to run for the Florida House of Representatives in 2012.
