Rolando Lavarro became Jersey City’s first Asian and Filipino American council member when he was first elected in 2011, serving as City Council President from 2013 to 2019 and returning to the council in 2025. He advocates for affordability, transparency, and diversity, having championed earned sick days, living wages, and inclusionary zoning. A lifelong Jersey City resident, Lavarro has also fought to end ICE detention contracts and establish an Immigrant Affairs Commission.
